What kind of county manager cannot remember the last time his employees received a cost of living increase??? Whose fault is this mess that will end up costing the property owners of the county???

It's nice to see that this issue finally made it to last week's paper. Although the paper just touched on the salary issues the other reason why there is significant turnover is due to ineffective leadership. Something to keep in mind come election time.

First and foremost I was absolutely appalled that the head building inspector was given a 36%pay raise to keep him from allegedly going to Surry county.. The rest of the county employees should sue the county or go outside the county and get a job offer and see if the county will match it as they did for this employee. The county has told other employees that this employee is better, more important then they are. This is a recipe for disaster. Did the county even get this employee sign a contract.?

I really cant believe the ems is not also losing employees like all the other departments. This is not only confined to Alleghany as other counties around are losing employees for two reasons. First is pay and second to put it bluntly treating them like dirt. You treat an employee right and they will stay and work for less money.

When you have your highest paid employees leaving in droves you have not only a problem but a disaster in the making. Employees suffer, tax payers suffer. The county has all but been hit in the head with a hammer as to the problem of employees leaving employment. Salaries of all 100 counties employees are readily available on the NC school of governments web site. You dont have to waste money on a study to see the disparity.
