Cell tower site scam warnings issued

antithesis

I've heard from several people that were contacted about leasing parts of their land out for cell phone towers, they were going to make so much money!

Now I'm reading that this is a big scam going around in Wilkes and Ashe...

The Wilkes and Ashe county sheriff's offices issued warnings about a scam in which intended victims are told that a company wants to lease property from them for a cell phone tower.

The intended victims are then instructed to send money for a deed search, land survey and/or consultant's fee, but they get nothing in return after sending the money. Ashe County Sheriff B. Phil Howell said investigators believe there are many potential victims.

Major Logan Kerr of the Wilkes Sheriff's Office said on Dec. 21 that the Ashe Sheriff's Office is working with the U.S. attorney's office in Charlotte on the matter so Wilkes property owners who believe they were a victim (or intended victim) of the scam should contact the Ashe Sheriff's Office. That number is 336-846-5633.

Be careful out there! It seems like just about everything is a scam anymore...
