Mr. Roten is known to my narcotics people," Ashe County Sheriff James Williams said. "We are very aware of him. This is not his first rodeo, but it may be his last. Sometimes, it's better to be lucky than good. We'll be talking to the federal authorities about this soon." ------ Wonder why he wasn't already in jail ? Guess they kept giving him a little smack on the hand.

Tweaked? And why did he have all those drugs with him??? Just coincidence? He is well know in Ashe, said the officer. Gone for a long time and deserves what he gets!

Ashe County Sheriff deputies uncovered more than three pounds of crystal methamphetamine with an estimated street value of more than $225,000, three mason jars of moonshine, marijuana, mushrooms and approximately $6,000 while responding to a call regarding a vehicle blocking traffic on old Highway 16 in the Glendale area at approximately 3 a.m. Sept. 11.

At approximately 3 a.m. Sept. 11, Ashe County deputies responded to a call regarding a vehicle blocking the road on old Highway 16 in the Glendale Springs area.
As a result, Billy James, Roten, 40, of North Wilkesboro, was charged with three counts of trafficking methamphetamine.
"Mr. Roten is known to my narcotics people," Ashe County Sheriff James Williams said. "We are very aware of him. This is not his first rodeo, but it may be his last. Sometimes, it's better to be lucky than good. We'll be talking to the federal authorities about this soon."
"Responding Deputy Chris Roten found this vehicle sitting in the road," Williams said. "The individual was asleep or unconscious for some reason or another and he had drugs in the vehicle that they saw when they approached the vehicle. That gave them the probable cause they needed to conduct a further search, place him under arrest and seize everything you see here."
Everything included more than three pounds of crystal methamphetamine with an estimated street value of more than $225,000, three mason jars of moonshine, marijuana, mushrooms and approximately $6,000 in cash.
An Ashe County drug investigation officer said this bust was quite substantial. The officer requested his name not be mentioned due to his position with the sheriff's department.
"For our patrol guys, this is probably the largest seizure of meth by any patrol officer, to my knowledge, ever here at the sheriff's office," the officer said. "We've gotten a pound on several occasions, but seeing something like this coming from patrol is awesome. They're the guys who were out here while everyone else was home sleeping."
Unfortunately, the officer said that the methamphetamine problem in Ashe County is far from over.
"We're actually seeing the quantity of meth going up," the officer said. "Our seizures, the actual amount of seizures, we've seen go up the last couple of years."
