Police say they do not believe foul play was involved him her death. Boone police chief Dana Crawford says, "At this point we do not have direct information that there is foul play. In fact, there are factors to indicate that Ms. Smith was intent on harming herself. I know this is difficult for family and friends to hear, but these are facts."

Crawford went on to say a handwritten letter was found with Smith's body. Police believe Smith wrote the letter but plan to have a forensic analysis done to confirm that information.

I don't remember that JoeT, but women should never walk alone in some places, maybe not anywhere.

I could be wrong, but it looks to me as if her body was found less then 500 yards from where she was last seen. Such a sad story. There's a young lady I consider a daughter that is in her freshman year at App as well. I'll admit, this story scared me. It would be a hard call either way. If you didn't alert everyone and treat it as if it could have been foul play, then should something else happen....

Boone police are treating it as a suicide according to an article in the Watauga Democrat. And for all the people screaming castrate the dude that assaulted her...WHAT IF IT WAS ANOTHER FEMALE? There is not enough information yet to form any coherent opinions, but the idiots are happy to fearmonger if it helps their ego.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Let's hope they are unrelated. College campuses have a knack for attracting some unsavory characters to go along with all those fresh, young faces.

As a student at ASU, I sometimes walked to Winn-Dixie. I'm familiar with that road. I'm so sorry abut her death.

There was another one around the same time she disappeared. But it doesn't sound like it was related. Smith's sounds more like a date rape situation. The other was in the woods behind the stadium.

Have there been other assaults reported around the ASU campus recently other than this young lady's?

Fins called this from the beginning. She was assaulted just a few days before she disappeared.

This breaks my heart for her family, the poor girl must have had something heavy weighing on her mind.

How terrible. But some knuckleheads aren't happy unless they're jumping to conclusions, and scaring the populace.
