I think the words "gender expression" along with gender identity was the change Charlotte tried to make that got this fire going. All single stall toilets was not the problem, multiple showers and dressing rooms, yes that was a problem. Creating new minority classes to be protected is a very slippery slope

Mommotwo......stereotype much? What you can do is document, follow good employment practices, and show reason to terminate someone for not doing their job. Here's a conundrum......I get married, I add my now same sex spouse to my insurance, etc. Now I'm out of the closet all the way and bam I can be fired for being gay. How is that fair?

Mommo in my experience you've just described work great with women.

No one is saying it's Always except bigots. You know sometimes it is because they are gay. Imagine that sometimes people really at bigots.

Hb2 allows bigot behavior.

Right....so....an employer fires a gay guy and it's immediately because he is gay. I know exactly how that works. He may be a drama queen that stirs the pot constantly and causes more grief at work between coworkers then he ever actually works....but it's ALWAYS gonna be because he is gay. HB2 is a good thing.

Yes I'm fully aware but you can sue or file a claim if you believe it was for one of the protected reasons. But with hb2 that is no longer the case.

At will does not mean they can fire for ANY reason. That's a fact!!!

You are wrong. And I'm fully aware that NC is an At Will state, do you understand what that means? You still can not be fired for reasons that are illegal in Federal or State. It is a misconception that an employer can fire you for any reason, that's not true. Well it wasn't true until HB2, now it is in NC.

Your Rights as an At-Will Employee

Even if you are an at-will employee, you still cannot be fired for reasons that are illegal under state and federal law. In these situations, the government has decided to make an exception to the general rule of at-will employment.

For example, if your employer is subject to federal and state laws prohibiting job discrimination (as all but the smallest employers are), you cannot be fired because of certain characteristics, such as your race, religion, or gender. (For more information on discrimination, see Your Rights Against Discrimination and Harassment.) Similarly, you cannot be fired because you have complained about illegal activity, about discrimination or harassment, or about health and safety violations in the workplace (see Nolo's article Assert Your Safety Rights Without Fear of Retaliation). And you cannot be fired for exercising a variety of legal rights, including the right to take family and medical leave, to take leave to serve in the military, or to take time off work to vote or serve on a jury.

Does HB2 affect rights of people who aren't gay or transgender?

Yes. The law limits how people pursue claims of discrimination because of race, religion, color, national origin, biological sex or handicap in state courts. The law also means a city or county cannot set a minimum wage standard for private employers.

I think you are wrong, hangs. This did not change protected classes. Also, NC is employment at will....so..it didn't affect that either.

It would have to be decided before July 1st when the law is supposed to take place.

NC is wasting money and resources. When you allow discrimination then you are against the US Constitution.

NC's HB2 law allows employers to discriminate for basically ANY REASON. You're a woman and employer doesn't want women working, then YOU'RE FIRED no recourse in the state of NC unless you go Federal.

I thought they'd fold but it looks like McCrory will stand his ground. This will not be decided until after the election. I say it should be voted on in November in the general election. See how the majority of the voters feel.

I think the county has seen the first backlash of HB2 and of our county commissioners vote to support it.

The New River Marathon happened on Saturday. Normally the night before all three major motels/hotels in the county are full the night before. This year all were at about 1/3rd capacity. A fairly large blow to local business. I hope it is not a sign of things to come this year.

Now there could be other factors as well such as it coinciding with Mother's Day Weekend this year as well as graduation weekend for many colleges, but I think part of it is blowback. Tourism being so vital to the county our commissioners should never have voted in support of it.

Ultimately I don't like HB2 because of the things it does beyond the bathroom and the bathroom portion is poorly worded enough that a minor child in the custody of a guardian in the wrong restroom could potentially be charged.

The county's businesses though can't survive such a steep loss in business if it is blowback, I only wish our commissioners understood that. Sadly we won't know probably if it is blowback or the holiday until the next event in the county.
