When FDR initiated S/S it was done so with the expectancy that there would be jobs available for people to earn enough to save. Also, most jobs were pensionable, unfortunately that situation did not last. Successive administrations have plundered the surplus every year using the loophole that FDR had not anticipated. Had the fund not been hi-jacked there would be somewheres north of $25 trillion sat in the surplus plus interest, had it been wisely invested. Yet, the righties are constantly calling for S/S to be discontinued "it's going bankrupt." How is it going bankrupt when it's owed $25 + trillion?

Try to keep up, hon. Fred was trying to say that the CURRENT Republicans in Congress had something to do with the COLA, and I pointed out that the policy has been in place for almost 50 years.
