You are out of most reasonable discussions HT. There was a time you would be entertained in general topics.and allowed to present your point of view, but that day has passed. You offered yourself as educated with a sane concept of reality but you have descended into nothing more that a talking point on MSNBC. Disappointing but true

36 trillion is what we owe. The debt ceiling was reached the day after Trump took office. I have yet to hear from the democrats or the republicans how we are going to pay it back. Is the plan to let the next generations sufffer because of our selfishness and being corrupt. We can't taxed our way out of this mess. Elon is worth 400 billion and if we seized all his assets, we would still owe over 35 trillion. That is the richest man in the world. If you seized every billionaire's money which is less than a 1000, we would be bankrupt by the end of the year. Now it was Social Security heads that told Elon it was about a billion a week that was being paid out fraudulently. I don't understand why anybody is complaining about government money being misused and returned back to the government. There was a precedent that was set by President Obama who appointed a commission for government efficiency. Might remember Erskine/Bowles which had six private citizens. The only difference is nobody listen to their recommendations

This is the relevent section where the $2T figure comes from (I cut a lot of the flowery language out):

"Mandatory spending currently accounts for over 70 percent of the entire Federal budget. The deficit for fiscal year 2025 is projected to be $1.9 trillion, or 6.2 percent of GDP. This fiscal year, net interest will total $952 billion, or 3.2 percent of GDP... the goal [is] to reduce mandatory spending by $2 trillion over the budget window. If the combined deficit reduction provided by authorizing committees is below this target ... the instruction provided to ... Ways and Means ... should be reduced by a commensurate amount to offset the difference."

Note that if you look at the actual PDF, none of the cuts have been outlined yet. They've just left themselves a blank space to fill in the details later on. Given this is still in discussion/debate internally, I'm not surprised, but it's important to note we don't yet know what the cuts will actually look like until some of this stuff is filled in. The "mandatory spending" is almost all Social Security (35%), Healthcare Programs like Medicare/Medicaid, CHIP (41%).
